One really cool thing about making non-fiction comics is that you get to use fascinating reference material.
These photos are of the 1913 Canadian Arctic Expedition. I found them in the Rauner Special Collections Library at Darmouth's online archive of the Stefansson Collection.
All photos are taken by Vilhjalmur Stefansson the leader of the expedition and all around bad guy.
The second photo shows John Hadley, a trapper, and the fourth shows George Malloch, a geologist aboard the ship The Karluk.
Both feature as secondary characters in my upcoming comic. I am very excited to start sharing pages with you soon.

Tester page. Inked with crow quill on Bristol.
This is getting closer to what I want. I’m definitely still not there.
The composition in my panels is still a problem. I am also not overly fond of the opening panel. It has some real problems.
I start making pages for real on October 1st, so I need to grind hard for the next 2 weeks and get more tests done.
I’m going to colour this page tomorrow to test out some colouring techniques.

I spent some time this evening putting together a system for organising my thesis work.
I’ve made a notebook for each month until it is due. In the front of each notebook are charts that I adapted from those found in Alec Longstreth’s Your Comics Will Love You Back lecture.
I’m trying to get 160 pages done in the next 8 months, so I will have to keep things super organised.
I might make a few more posts about this system after I’ve started filling out the notebooks and see if it works like how I think it will.
